Ruhr area.
After two corona failures and a year of uncertainty, the extra shift is back with a full program. And this time with even more light.

More light – is not possible. Not here, in the gold-soaked world of the Viennese artist Gustav Klimt, namely in its radiant, larger-than-life, walk-in, digitized and musically underlaid version. Connoisseurs like to speak of an “immersive exhibition”, which underlines one’s own connoisseurship so beautifully: They are simply exhibitions in which people should immerse themselves. that are meant to overwhelm.

Light and overwhelming: Which brings us effortlessly to the next “extra shift”. The Night of Industrial Culture will be celebrated on June 24th this year, on the last Saturday in June as (almost) always. And almost in the approaching summer holidays. This time there: 22 cities, 44 venues, 130 buses and, if the weather holds up, 200,000 visitors. A midsummer night’s dream with an announcement.

“The extra shift shaped the self-confidence of the region”

And for the first time there is “Phoenix des Lumières”, the “Phoenix of Lights” with its digital overpowering by Klimt (Hundertwasser, Schiele . . .) in large. As you might have guessed, the center is located on the former industrial site of the same name in Dortmund and has developed into a major attraction in recent months.

There they will also present the program for the Extraschicht 2023 on Thursday. “Extraschicht has shaped the region’s self-confidence like hardly any other format,” says Axel Biermann, Managing Director of the organizing “Ruhr Tourismus”: “This year we welcome well-known venues as well as spectacular new ones.”

Gleaming facades and an illuminated drone show on the head frame

And so they will make the facade of the Archeology Museum in Herne shine as well as the Museum Zeche Hannover in Bochum. In the “Fürst Leopold” quarter in Dorsten there is an illuminated drone show on the head frame. “Phoenix des Lumières” of course and many, many other old buildings in fashionable red, yellow, blue, green: that a new light falls on the entire Ruhr area is the point of the whole thing.

If you’ve never been there, Extraschicht works like this: One ticket gives you access to all venues and you can stay there as long as you want. But you can also let yourself be carried away from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., driving to different locations, there is also a network of shuttle buses. Their fare is included in the ticket and also entitles you to travel throughout the VRR area. All details should now be available on extraschicht.de stand.

Simply the greatest spectacle that the Ruhr area has to offer

Otherwise? Never change a winning concept. Acrobats will climb towers, cabaret artists will talk about football, musicians will play in lanes, pantomimes will walk across the terrain. Sing choirs, read authors, lead friends. Forbidden places open. Street dance, hip hop, body art. Brauhof party at Fiege, jazz at the Dortmunder U, Auguste Victoria mountain band at the Erzschacht in Marl, Abba cover band. The new Westerholt colliery in Gelsenkirchen/Herten and a walk at high altitude on Phoenix West are also included for the first time. All in all: simply the greatest spectacle that the Ruhr area has to offer.

The ticket now costs 20 euros, reduced 16 euros; at the box office it will cost 24 euros. You can order it online and you will then be sent the control wristband that you have to wear that evening. Ruhrtop Card holders pay ten euros. Children up to the age of six have free entry.
