Suddenly he is really in demand: the value of the Trabi is increasing and increasing. It’s not even the most coveted German car. Here are the top ten.
Everything is getting more expensive – even vintage cars. The German Classic Car Index (DOX) of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) shows which cars are in demand and which are not.

The evaluation specialist Classic-analytics determines and weights the values of 88 representative and popular models. The index is then calculated from these numbers. And it has been since 1999. During this time, the DOX has increased in value by 190 percent in Germany. This means that the values of many a car have multiplied over the past 20 years.
In 2022, too, prices have risen significantly in some cases. Overall, they increased by 4.8 percent compared to the previous year.
According to the VDA, the sometimes immense delivery times for new cars may also have led to the fact that some classic cars and some everyday models were in greater demand. However, some models have developed significantly better than the market as a whole, while the broad midfield of the models examined shows only minor changes in value.
Especially German models in demand
Among the top ten of these cars (largest value increase from 2018 to 2022) are eight models from German manufacturers. The Ford Capri I (built between 1969 and 1972) made the biggest jump: Its value has doubled in just a few years. It is followed by the VW K70 (1970-73) and Passat (1978-80).
Fourth place is taken by what is perhaps the biggest surprise in the ranking: the Trabi (1974-90). Its value has increased by around 80 percent in five years. The only models from foreign manufacturers in the top ten are the Pontiac Firebird and the Toyota Celica.

On the other hand, there was no performance for large US models such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Cadillac Eldorado and Ford Thunderbird. Classics like Jaguar E-Type and Mercedes 190 SL have even lost a lot of value.
