So, what’s your favorite sci-fi movie of 2022? Dune? Avatar? In an interview with Deadline, Guillermo Del Toro talks about another name that has become “a landmark”.
Like every year, the world of cinema offered us a lot of extraordinary experiences! At the moment it is of course Avatar: The Waterway which is the center of attention. James Cameron’s latest baby is well on its way to reaching its huge goal of two billion dollars. But science fiction in 2022 isn’t just the planet Pandora. In a recent interview with Deadline : Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth | The Shape of Water) made a point of quoting another representative of the genre – certainly less popular, but just as striking.
As powerful as Tarantino and Trainspotting?
The Mexican director talks about Everything Everywhere All at Once by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (the Daniels), the crazy adventure in the multiverse with Michelle Yeoh in the lead role. “When I see (that a film like that, editor’s note) has such an impact on my children’s generation and that they cherish it in the same way that I cherished The winner when I was their age, I love it,” says Del Toro. “I like that people can be passionate about a film that speaks to them personally, even if the older generation does not understand it”… For his part, Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Gravity), also present on the interview, compares the “energy injection” of Everything Everywhere to cult films like the Tarantinos or Trainspotting by Danny Boyle.

2022, a rich year for Guillermo Del Toro
Speaking of energy, Guillermo Del Toro has not been idle in 2022… The Mexican director has not released one, nor two, but three projects: films Nightmare Alley | Pinocchio – both well to very well received by critics – and the Netflix series Cabinet of Curiosities. Clearly, this is the highest rated 2022 multi-episode show on the streaming platform. For his next baby, the director would be on a “monster movie”, as he noted on the podcast Circuit Awards by Variety.
