MIAMI – The Nicolás Maduro regime has ordered the cancellation of flights to several countries that questioned his self-proclaimed electoral victory. This decision has caused chaos for travelers seeking to enter or leave the country.

The abrupt decision by the regime, which came amid a climate of high political tension, has left thousands of passengers stranded at the country’s airports. This measure has not only affected internal mobility but has also had a negative impact on international connections, further exacerbating the political and social crisis facing Venezuela.

Colombia has become the only option for regional flights out of the country, but prices have been rising. A flight from Caracas to the Colombian capital, which normally takes about two hours and costs less than $200, topped $800 last Friday, according to Bloomberg.

The lack of flight options is trapping Venezuelans living abroad who returned home to participate in the July 28 elections, in which the regime committed fraud to remain in power.
