Mexico City.- Faced with three possible cases of human rabies in Oaxaca, two of which are reported in serious condition, the State Health Secretariat activated an epidemiological surveillance protocol.

Those affected, belonging to the Palo de Lima locality, in the San Lorenzo Texmelucan municipality, are 8, 7 and 2 years old and were admitted to the Dr. Aurelio Valdivieso Civil Hospital in Oaxaca.

According to the agency, two of the patients are in serious condition, and one is stable and under medical surveillance.

“Laboratory tests were carried out, which were sent for analysis to the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference, in order to confirm or rule out the presence of the virus,” the agency said.

According to the local Ministry of Health, personnel from the Rabies and other Zoonoses program of the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Cenaprece), from the state rabies program and from the IMSS Bienestar carry out surveillance actions in the town and look for contacts.

The Ministry of Health asked the population that in the event of an aggression by domestic or wild animals, report and go to the medical service to initiate the care protocol that allows the presence of the virus to be identified in time.

He also recommended avoiding touching or approaching wild animals.

On December 21, a probable case of human rabies was reported in Nayarit.

It was about a woman who was attacked by a cat that died days later with symptoms of the rabies virus.

Just at the end of last September, Mexico was the first country to receive validation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for the elimination of human rabies transmitted by dogs.

Ruy López Ridaura, head of Cenaprece, announced that the National Anti-Rabies Vaccination Program is being reformulated to expand its scope and include coordinated actions to control rabies in wildlife and domestic animals.
