Tichanovskaya warns Europe against ruler Lukashenko
Osnabruck. Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya warns Europe of the unpredictability of ruler Alexander Lukashenko. “He will do everything to save his own skin and he has no regard for the fate of the Belarusians,” she told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. This includes, for example, the stationing of Russian nuclear weapons in his country. Like any dictator, Lukashenko is “deeply paranoid and sees enemies everywhere – real and imaginary.”
Lukashenko is a close ally of Putin in the war against Ukraine. Kremlin troops use Belarus as a staging area. Lukashenko has been in power in Belarus for more than a quarter of a century. The West has not recognized him as head of state since the 2020 election, which was marked by numerous allegations of manipulation. With the backing of Russia, he brutally suppressed mass protests before and after the election. Since then he has been considered dependent on Putin.
Tichanovskaya ran against Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election. She now lives in exile in Lithuania. In her homeland she was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
