Tips to protect your pets during fireworks and prevent them from escaping

DENVER, Colorado – As most of us gaze up at the night sky this coming Tuesday, July 4, many pets will do whatever they can to escape the dazzling and loud fireworks that accompany our nation’s birthday.

That’s why the Denver Animal Protection Agency (DAP) reminds us that while fireworks are fun for people, they are terrifying for our furry friends.

Fireworks, sparklers, and other devices that emit bright light and sound can scare off even the most highly trained pets. Frightened animals are much more at risk of running away, hiding, or becoming destructive.

But there are plenty of ways to keep your pet safe and calm during the Independence Day celebrations. So before you take your pet to a party or fireworks show, check out the following pet safety tips:

WHAT NOT TO DO

  • Taking your pet to parades or fireworks shows or leaving your pet in the car during fireworks shows.
  • Leaving pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a leash. Pets that would not normally leave the yard can run away and get lost, or become entangled in your chain, when they are afraid. This could put them at risk of injury or death.
  • Never leave a pet alone in a hot car. Temperatures inside a car on hot days can quickly reach 120 degrees. Animals can suffer life-threatening heat stroke within minutes, which can cause organ failure and death.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

  • Keep pets indoors in a safe, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when scared, so be sure to put breakable items away.
  • Find a pet sitter if you’re going to be away from home for the day.
  • Provide a safe place. Pets may seek out a small burrow-like spot, such as a cage, if they are scared or stressed. Create a safe place and familiarize your pet with the area to reduce stress during fireworks.
  • License and microchip of your pet. If your pet runs away, make sure they are licensed and microchipped. Having identification will increase the likelihood that your pet will be returned to you. Visit the Denver Animal Shelter (DAS) at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave. to get your pet microchipped or licensed today!
  • Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they are lost, they can be returned immediately. DAP offers customizable pet IDs.
  • Use a leash or carrier when transporting your pet. If you must be outside with your pet, keep it on a leash or in a crate.
  • Talk to your vet if you know your dog has anxiety. A doctor can prescribe medications that can help.
  • Keep sparklers, glow sticks, charcoal, food scraps, and kabob skewers away from curious pets.

A lost pet can mean a broken heart. DAP has additional tips on how to prevent and find a lost pet. Animals found running free should be taken to your local animal shelter, including DAS, where they will have the best chance of reuniting with their owners.
