This Friday, February 3, marks the fourth anniversary of the electoral triumph of Nayib Bukele in the 2019 presidential elections, which meant the defeat of the bipartisanship, which governed the country for 30 years with officials who are currently facing judicial processes, some are fugitives from justice, or have already been sentenced for acts of corruption.

It is worth mentioning that on that date, Nayib Bukele became the youngest President in the country’s history and the youngest in all of Latin America.

For these elections, the Farabundistas aspired to a third term in the Executive, with Hugo Martínez as a candidate for president and Karina Sosa as vice president. For its part, ARENA was competing with the businessman Carlos Calleja as a presidential candidate and Carmen Aída Lazo for the vice presidency.

However, both formulas were defeated in free and democratic elections by Nayib Bukele, who had popular support and achieved electoral victory in the first round. As a result of that victory, Bukele was sworn in and assumed the presidency of the republic on June 1, 2019.

It is worth mentioning that his resounding presidential victory was preceded by his two terms as mayor. The first in Nuevo Cuscatlán, a small municipality in La Libertad that became renowned thanks to a new form of municipal management. The second was in the country’s capital, San Salvador, where he also implemented new forms of development, hand in hand with public-private alliances, which favored the residents of the capital and whose most notorious work was the recovery of the heart of the Historic Center. A job in which all his predecessors had failed.

Four years into his presidency, 90% of citizens, that is, nine out of 10, approve the management of the president of the republic.

This is indicated by the latest opinion poll that the renowned pollster CID Gallup conducted between January 16 and 27 on a national scale, the results of which were presented yesterday, Thursday, January 2, 2023. According to the historical record, none of the last seven governors of El Salvador have obtained that unprecedented percentage of approval.
