On January 31, 1997, Final Fantasy VII was released in Japan on PlayStation enjoying enormous success and over time becoming one of the most successful video games ever. From this year, January 31 is officially recognized as an anniversary for the Japanese calendar.

Square Enix has in fact announced that it has registered the Final Fantasy VII Day as a holiday thanks to the Japan Anniversary Association, this means that every year in Japan, on January 31, the anniversary of Final Fantasy 7 will be officially celebrated.

For the occasion, Yoshinori Kitase (director of Final Fantasy VII director and producer of Final Fantasy VII Remake) posted a message:

On January 31, 1997 Final Fantasy VII was released in Japan, a significant day not only for the Final Fantasy saga but also for the video game industry and for all of us. I remember how technology made great strides evolving very quickly, allowing us to start exploring the future. With the official anniversary, I will always remember this date, which has long been imprinted in my heart.

Final Fantasy 7 was undoubtedly a “Game changer“, or one of those titles capable of changing the face of electronic entertainment forever and chart a path that will then be followed universally not only by Square Enix but by the entire industry.
