In recent days, the roads in southern Norway have been characterized by large amounts of snow.

But the storm is not over yet.

On Friday, a total of 37 yellow danger warnings for gusts of wind were sent out along the entire Norwegian coast, and several rainfall warnings.

The worst will be on the roads in Telemark and Agder, which can be covered with another 25 to 40 centimeters of snow.

– This area stands out very much. They get the weather right, says meteorologist on duty at Storm Geo, Isak Slettebø.

– The worst day

The meteorologist explains that there is a difference between cold air over Eastern Scandinavia and warm air over the North Sea which leads to the enormous amounts of precipitation. The front is also moving slowly because a high pressure in Russia keeps the low pressure hanging over us.

– Today is probably especially rough, and will probably be the worst. But starting tomorrow already it will get better with less snow and wind, says the meteorologist.

According to Slettebøe, the worst will pass during the day, and the snowy weather will change to rain for most by Sunday.

The strong wind along the coast of the country will decrease abruptly during the day. It will be worst for the westerners, with strong gales all the way up to Sogn, and in Trøndelag.

– They have pleasant weather there, but there is still a storm blowing, he says.

Will last throughout the day

Traffic operator at Vegtrafikksentralen West, Christer Heide, says that the storm with strong wind and snow makes it difficult to comply with the requirements they set for the safety of motorists.

– You probably have to be confident that it will last well into the day, says Heide.

He encourages motorists to have a full tank, some snacks and warm clothes available in the car.

– Take some precautions. You never know, things change quickly in the mountains.

If you are going between east and west, Heide encourages you to drive over Filefjell, which according to him is less often closed.

The January weather also leads to difficult driving conditions in northern Norway. In Finnmark, there were convoys over several stretches last night.

– The fact that there may be several closed roads throughout the day cannot be ignored, says Christer Svendsen, traffic operator at Vegtrafikksentralen in the north.

– Went better yesterday

Operations manager in the Oslo police district says that things are mostly going well for most people.

– People mostly do things right. Plan well, keep a distance from the cars in front of you, and drive according to the conditions, is the operations manager’s call to motorists.

He says that on Thursday evening there were considerably fewer conditions and incidents the police had to deal with on the roads.

– There have been a number of lorries that have spun, but it is not abnormal on this type of road, says Sandnes.

Without wanting to speculate, the operations manager says that it may be a good combination of more people staying at home, and that maintenance on the roads has been better.

– If you have the opportunity to avoid taking the car today, you are still welcome to do so.
