Track of Tropical Storm Hilary

Tropical storm Hilary formed on the morning of this Wednesday, August 16, in the Pacific Ocean, south of the coast of Guerrero, in Mexico, and could become a hurricane this Thursday.

According to the most recent report from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico, Hilary will bring heavy rains to several states in the south and west of the country.

According to the SMN notice, the center of Hilary was located at approximately 9:00 am, 590 kilometers south of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and 755 km south-southeast of Manzanillo, Colima.

The advisory added that, at the time, Hilary’s maximum sustained winds were 65 km/h, gusting to 85 km/h.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States, Hilary will continue to strengthen and is expected to become a hurricane this Thursday.

What states is Hilary threatening?

Hilary’s cloud bands are expected to bring heavy rainfall to the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacán and Oaxaca, in addition to precipitation in Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit, according to the SMN forecast.

For its part, the NHC said that the tropical storm is expected to reach Baja California Sur this weekend.

“The rainfall caused by this system could be caused by electrical discharges, and generate landslides, an increase in river and stream levels, overflows, and floods in areas of the mentioned states,” says the SMN.
