Berlin/Munich.
The picture has been the same for weeks: From Friday, the routes in the direction of the ski areas fill up, on Sunday the cars line up in the opposite direction – away from there it’s usually quieter.

Ski and snowboard? Yes, sure. Tobogganing? Absolutely, so let’s go. But those who first have to drive a car to get to the winter sports areas will first need a lot of patience next weekend (February 10th to 12th). Because good snow conditions in the Alps and low mountain ranges ensure a real “rush”, he says Auto Club Europe (ACE).

Also loud ADAC it is therefore sometimes “extremely crowded and congested” on the typical arrival and departure routes, especially in southern Germany. But there is not only a lot going on on the motorways, but also on the secondary routes. The winter holidays are beginning in Saxony and Thuringia, they are still going on in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and they are ending in Saxony-Anhalt. There are also vacationers who are not tied to a holiday, as well as day trippers and weekend trippers.

Many want to go to the Alps or the low mountain ranges

Commuter traffic causes a high risk of traffic jams on Friday, especially on the routes around the metropolitan areas from noon to the evening.

On Saturday, the classic arrival routes fill up. The risk of traffic jams increases on the A 7, A 8, A 95 and A 99 motorways in the direction of the Alps, especially on Saturday mornings – on Saturday and Sunday afternoons it gets full in the opposite direction.

The corresponding routes in the low mountain ranges are also filling up. The start of the winter holidays in Saxony and Thuringia is making itself felt in the Harz Mountains and the Ore Mountains.

Apart from that, according to the clubs, traffic should roll normally nationwide. However: Delays due to construction sites, accidents, full closures and winter weather are possible.

Traffic at our neighbors

According to the clubs, there should be delays in the access roads to the winter sports areas in Austria and Switzerland over the weekend. Because the rush is increasing, according to the ADAC. In addition, some federal states of Austria and cantons of Switzerland are also on vacation.

Travelers must also be prepared for this on the transit routes. The heaviest traffic is expected on Saturday and Sunday in the morning and late afternoon.

Typical traffic jams in Austria are the Tauern, Inntal and Brenner autobahns, the Fernpass route and the Tyrolean, Salzburg and Vorarlberg federal roads. For Switzerland, the Autoclub names the Gotthard route, the access roads to the ski areas of Graubünden, the Bernese Oberland, Valais and Central Switzerland.

The ACE is already expecting traffic jams at the north portal of the tunnel on the Gotthard route on Friday evening. This also applies to Saturday mornings. Traffic jams can also occur in front of the southern portal throughout the weekend. In the case of waiting times of more than an hour, the ACE recommends an alternative route via the San Bernardino (A 13).

On the return journey there may be shorter waiting times at the borders from Austria to Germany. The ADAC is currently not assuming more than half an hour.

You can see how long you have to wait at the Walserberg (Salzburg – Bad Reichenhall), Kiefersfelden (Kufstein Süd – Kiefersfelden) and Suben (Ort i. Innkreis – Pocking) crossings on-line at the Austrian infrastructure company Asfinag.

About the situation on the alpine roads informs the ACE online. (dpa)
