Train rearrangement tasks continue after crash in New York subway

NEW YORK – In the tight confines of a New York City subway tunnel, crews try to place the massive cars back on the tracks after two passenger trains collided and derailed, causing service disruptions that lasted for a second day. on Friday.

The low-speed crash left trains blocking both local and northbound express tracks, meaning partial service can only be restored once the derailed train is out of the way, said Janno Lieber, president of the Authority. Metropolitan Transport, at a briefing in front of the station on Friday morning.

However, placing the last of the train’s 10 cars on the rails is a complicated operation due to the subway tunnel’s low ceiling, according to NYC Transit President Richard Davey.

Transit workers are “literally lifting it a few inches, moving it, lifting it a little bit, moving it,” Davey said. “So that process takes a while.”

They investigate the causes of the crash

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. Thursday as a northbound train carrying about 300 passengers was changing from the express track to the local track at the 96th Street station, MTA officials said. The train collided with an out-of-service train with four workers on board. More than 20 people suffered minor injuries.

Davey added that the passenger train had the green light to proceed on Thursday, but the disabled train did not.

“As a result, he collided with the train,” he said. “We still do not know the reasons, it is still under investigation.”

A team from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived in New York on Friday to investigate the cause of the crash. The out-of-service train was moving slowly north after someone pulled several emergency stop cords and workers were on board to reset the brake cords, Davey said Thursday.

Officials said the disabled train, whose wheels were damaged by the impact of the collision, will be removed once the passenger train is placed back on the rails.
