The general director of the Mayan Train, Oscar David Lozano Aguila said that this project will be finished by December of this year but its complete operation, which includes 42 trains for the passenger and cargo sector, will be until December 2024.
In Mérida, Yucatán, he stated that after its commissioning in December 2023, the Mayan Train will only do so with only six diesel trains in the passenger segmentwhile the charging one will start gradually.
In the presence of experts from the railway industry, he mentioned that user demand will determine the most frequent trips and thus be able to increase or decrease, as the case may be. Likewise, he said that at a maximum stage, 110 trips and move more than 30 thousand passengers every day.
With regard to the most important sections, He highlighted that the section of Cancun-Chetumal is the most active, with 40 trips, after the destination Cancun-Mérida, with 24 trips and Cancun-Chichén Itzá, with 16 trips.
Likewise, he mentioned that he hopes that the subsidy that is received by the federal government, will decrease gradually until the year 2030, since it is planned that the trains will arrive and operate partially, that is, that 31 regular service trains will enter in December 2023 and October 2023. 2024, while the three long-distance lines would be ready by June-July 2024 and eight restaurants would be in service by November-December of that same year.
For her part, the CEO of the company Alstomwho builds the trains, Maité Ramos, He said that the first train of four diesel cars will be delivered on July 8, the date that will begin with the dynamic and static tests, for six months so that it is ready when it is inaugurated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
One of the main components of the Mayan Train will be the cargo sector, which will be important, according to Lozano Águila, because it will be the business unit that will make the project profitable, but it will start operating until September of the following year.
The main load would be fuel, since Mexican oil (Pemex), represents 80 percent of the cargo in the Yucatan Peninsula, although it is expected to move other inputs such as food, cars, among others.
It is estimated that in a first phase, 2 million tons per year will be captured, in a second, 2.9 million tons and already in the strong stage, move 5.4 million tons per year and it is estimated that by the year 2053, the Train Maya I managed to move 12.53 million tons per year.
The Mayan Train will have terminals in Progress, Campeche, Chetumal and Cancun. It is expected that the project can be connected to Central America in the future and it is expected to operate jointly with the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
For his part, the Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marques, He also highlighted that regarding the railway issue, the Mayan Train, which will cover 1,525 kilometers of railway, will have 21 stations, 13 whereabouts and 117 high-impact tourist attractions, benefiting five federal entities: Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas.
Likewise, he said that only from the period from 2019 to 2022, they have invested 207 thousand 277 million pesos in the construction of one of the flagship works of the federal government and added that, for this project, sectur It has created 64 proposals for cultural and adventure tourism packages that will bring greater investment to the southern part of the country.
