Tropical storm Hilary forms in the Mexican Pacific

Mexico City.- Tropical storm Hilary, the eighth named cyclone of the 2023 Pacific season, formed this Wednesday off the coast of southern Mexico, and its cloudy bands will cause rain in southern and western states of Mexico, reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

In a statement, the SMN indicated that tropical storm Hilary formed in the morning, which will cause heavy rains in the states of Guerrero, Michoacán and Oaxaca, as well as heavy rainfall in Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit.

“At 09:00, central Mexico time (15:00 GMT), its center was located approximately 590 kilometers (km) south of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and 755 km south-southeast of Manzanillo, Colima,” the agency stated. .

In addition, he added, the phenomenon has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 85 km/h and displacement to the west-northwest, at 22 km/h.

The agency, dependent on the National Water Commission (Conagua), indicated that the phenomenon will cause wind with gusts of 70 to 90 km/h and waves of 2 to 4 meters high on the coast of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán and Oaxaca.

In its forecasts, the Meteorological Office of Mexico estimated that the system could generate rainfall with electrical discharges, landslides, overflows and floods in the aforementioned states.

For this reason, he urged the population to heed the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System, in each entity.

In addition, he asked tourists and maritime navigation to take extreme precautions against high waves.

In early May, the Government of Mexico forecast the possible formation of up to 38 named cyclones in the 2023 season, of which 5 could impact the country.

Of that number, between 16 and 22 systems could occur in the Pacific Ocean and between 10 and 16 in the Atlantic.
