In a tweet, Elon Musk announced that Twitter would give users the option of disabling the function that counts the number of views of a tweet.

The function will not have been unanimous. Deployed on December 22 and imagined by Elon Musk, the View Count function makes it possible to publicly display the number of views of a tweet. But that was without counting on the criticisms of some users who were unhappy with the display and the new design.

A few days later, on December 24, Elon Musk is already taking a step back, planning to give the possibility of deactivating the function. He announced it in a tweet in response to a comment.

“We’re going to improve the aesthetics and add a setting to disable this feature, but I think almost everyone will like it eventually,” he predicted in a tweet.

Encourage users to tweet

However, Elon Musk was enthusiastic when launching the new function designed to make the social network “more alive”.

“Twitter is rolling out view counting, so you can see how many times a tweet has been viewed! This is normal for videos. 90% of Twitter users read, but don’t tweet, reply or like because it’s public action,” he explained.

Until now, the statistics of a tweet were only visible to the user who wrote the message. View Count is only available for tweets posted after December 15. This function gives weight to users with a high number of subscribers and who place great importance on their visibility, but it can scare away other users.
