Two Venezuelans sentenced to 30 years in prison for trafficking marijuana and weapons of war

Caracas.- The Justice of Venezuela sentenced two men to 30 years in prison for trafficking marijuana and weapons of war and ammunition, the Public Ministry reported this Wednesday.

The subjects, aged 27 and 38 years old, they were accused of “illicit trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances in the form of concealment, trafficking of weapons of war and ammunition, and criminal association,” according to a press release from the prosecutor’s office.

Both Venezuelans were detained in June of last year in the coastal state of Sucre (northeast) by members of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB, militarized Police), who seized “two rifles of different calibers, a firearm and two panels of marijuana », with a total weight of 940 grams.

The sentenced “They remain in detention at the GNB headquarters” in the region, added the MP.

The authorities have arrested 8,931 people for drug trafficking from the beginning of the year until this Tuesday, a fight that also leaves a balance of 24 tons of narcotics seized, reported the Minister of the Interior and Justice, Remigio Ceballos.

The country claims to have the lowest prevalence of drug use in the Americas, as well as a territory free of illicit crops, although the authorities report daily operations against groups linked to drug trafficking, especially in the border regions with Colombia and Brazil.

In 2022, the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) and the police forces seized more than 47 tons of drugs, through hundreds of operations that resulted in 8,830 detainees.
