The PlayStation 5 has now been on the market for two years, but there are still some features that Sony has announced but not yet implemented. For example, the announced support for 8K video output via HDMI 2.1 is still missing.

Now this reminds you of that Online magazine FlatPanels HD (via Caschy). It looks like Sony is in no rush to add 8K support.

The yellow 8K logo is emblazoned on the PlayStation 5 packaging next to the 4K120 and HDR logos. In fact, the console has not yet received 8K support. There are probably a number of reasons for this – including the lack of market success for 8K and the few offers that have been available so far.

Still, one has to wonder why Sony advertised 8K early on and promised to launch support and is now standing by. Sony had announced that it would add 8K support “later” via a system update and then said nothing more about it.

Scaled Output

The PlayStation 5 supports internal 8K rendering. The 2021 adventure game “The Touryst” was the first game to offer 8K rendering at 60 frames per second. The PlayStation 5 is currently downscaling the output to 4K60. None of the major subscription streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ or Netflix currently offer content in 8K. YouTube, on the other hand, started 8K streaming back in 2015.

Sony’s 8K TV

Sony has been selling 8K TVs since 2019, Samsung had started a year earlier. LG and TCL also offer 8K TVs. However, consumers are not very interested. The online magazine FlatPanels HD also points out that a new EU energy regulation could ban 8K televisions as early as 2023.
