UEFA launches investigation against Morata and Rodri for Gibraltar-related chant

NYON.- The UEFA initiated a disciplinary process against the Spanish captain Alvaro Morata and Player of the Tournament Rodri for a chant in relation to Gibraltar’s claim to sovereignty during the European Championship title celebrations.

UEFA’s disciplinary inspector said he had been “appointed to assess possible violations” of the rules by both players.

Morata and Rodri led thousands of fans in chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” during celebrations in Madrid on Monday after the team beat England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final.

Gibraltar is located at the very southern tip of Spain and has been a British territory for over 300 years.

The Gibraltar Football Association has lodged an official complaint with UEFA.

UEFA did not give a date for a resolution to the case, which could lead to the players being suspended from playing in the Nations League in September.

During Euro 2024 in Germany, UEFA banned Albanian player Mirlind Daku for two matches for leading his fans in nationalist chants against Serbia and North Macedonia.

New stage:

Morata was announced on Friday as a new AC Milan player from Atletico Madrid. Rodri plays for Manchester City.

The Rossoneri won the last of their 19 Serie A titles in 2022 and have seven Champions League trophies to their name.

Morata also played for Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea in a career in which he has scored more than 200 goals for his clubs and 36 for Spain.

Milan said they chose to wear the number 7 shirt.
