Twitter is being sued for failing to pay the rent for its London offices which are owned by Britain’s Crown Estate.

Decidedly Twitter is a deadbeat. After its offices in San Francisco, it is the offices in London that are concerned. The British Crown Estate is taking legal action against the social network for not paying its rent.

The Crown Estate is a portfolio of British commercial properties historically owned by the monarchy. Now, this entity is managed by an independent board of directors and owns commercial buildings and land which generate profits collected by the UK government for public expenditure.

Located in the heart of the capital, the London offices of Twitter belong precisely to this entity which has initiated legal proceedings against Twitter, reported this January 24 a spokesperson for the Crown Estate to the American media CNN.

Offices close one after another

Discussions have already taken place between the two main parties concerned about these rent arrears. Even if the legal action is launched, exchanges would still be in progress, according to the spokesperson.

A similar situation occurred for the San Francisco offices. On December 29, a lawsuit was filed in San Francisco court by the owner of the Hartford Building. Columbia Reit, which leases its premises to the company, is claiming $136,250 in unpaid bills.

Around the world, Twitter offices are closing. As is already the case in Brussels, but also in Southeast Asia, where the company’s employees have found themselves laid off for lack of a place to work.
