Power grids damaged in five regions

1:23 p.m.: Russia’s latest attacks have damaged power grids in five regions, according to Ukrainian grid operator Ukrenergo. The company announced that this applies to Donetsk, Kharkiv, Cherson, Sumy and Chernihiv. “However, the nightly drone attacks did not damage the main energy infrastructure.”

Russian attacks have been causing power and heating failures in Ukraine for months. However, rapid repair work, including with spare parts from allies, has enabled Ukraine to restore energy supplies. Together with good conditions for hydroelectric, solar and wind power plants, the demand for electricity can now be fully covered, according to Ukrenergo.

EU Commission proposes new sanctions against Russia

1:21 p.m.: The EU Commission has proposed a new package of sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine war. The new measures are intended to curb the circumvention of existing sanctions, as Commission spokesman Eric Mamer announced on Monday. “The goal is to prevent goods banned for export to Russia from finding their way into the Russian military complex,” he said.

The package of sanctions proposed by the Commission is the eleventh since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. According to a document available to the AFP news agency, companies from China and Hong Kong are said to be affected by the sanctions over the Ukraine war for the first time. The eight companies mentioned are accused of exporting problematic goods to Russia.

Von der Leyen travels to Kiev on Tuesday

1:06 p.m.: EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Kiev on Tuesday. There she will meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, the Brussels authorities announced. The visit on Europe Day reaffirms “the EU’s unwavering support for the country”.

Europe Day is celebrated annually on the anniversary of the “Schuman Declaration”.
