Unclaimed $202 million from Rio Grande Valley residents

Billions of dollars remain unclaimed in Texas and claiming them is very simple, explains the state comptroller.

In all, “there is about $7 billion waiting to be claimed,” says Bryant Clayton, deputy director of the Unclaimed Property Division. Since 1986 there is money that has not been claimed although more than $4 billion have already reached the hands of their owners.

But how to claim money that is rightfully yours?

You just have to go to the website claimittexas.gov and provide your first name, last name, zip code and in a matter of seconds you will know if you have unclaimed money. If so, you can claim it on the same site following the instructions and as soon as in 7 days you will receive a check in the mail for the amount claimed.

According to Clayton, with a few exceptions, “there is no deadline to claim the property.”

What can be unclaimed property?

This includes cashier’s checks, stocks, utility deposits or refunds, bank accounts, as well as the contents of safe deposit boxes, insurance benefits, interest or royalties. Of course, real estate or vehicles are not included.

How much money is unclaimed in South Texas?

In the South Texas Valley there is more than $202 million unclaimed. From those, 106 million dollars are from people of Hidalgo County. Others $55 million is from Cameron County residentssome 37 million in Starr County and 2 million dollars in Willacy County.

It is important to know that the property of a deceased family member or spouse can be claimed if there is a will that names them as heir. If the person is incapacitated, a power of attorney will suffice.

This money or your assets are available indefinitely. It is also possible to claim them if you live in another state, even if you reside in another country.
