It is estimated that 40 percent of the workforce on dairy farms in the United States is immigrantpeople who work in states like Wisconsin.
Of that number, about 90 percent are undocumentedbut despite the fact that they are allowed to buy cars in the state, such people do not have access to driver’s licenses, so they face high fines.
Undocumented immigrants appear to be “okay” for authorities to round up the cows, milk them and clean up their manure, but not to let them live more freely, even in their spare time, ProPublica reported.
“The state makes it nearly impossible for workers to live off the farm without breaking the law,” the report states. “In Wisconsin, undocumented immigrants can own and register their cars and trucks, but they are not allowed to drive them.”
It is indicated that those who drive, due to the need for transportation to even buy groceries, are stopped and face fines “over and over again” that leave a hole in their income.
Melissa Sanchezone of the authors of the ProPublica investigationaddresses details in the podcast “El Diario Sin Límites” about the findings in Wisconsin and the challenges of groups that defend undocumented immigrants.
Wisconsin is the second largest milk-producing state in the US, behind California, where undocumented immigrants can apply for a driver’s license.
