United Federation of Teachers withdraws Medicare Advantage

The United Federation of Teachers has withdrawn support for the Medicare Advantage health program for its retired city members.

The Adams Administration has been trying to move 250,000 retirees from their traditional health care coverage to a privately managed Medicare Advantage plan.

This issue is currently resolved in the judicial system.

The United Federation of Teachers and other unions initially supported the change, but now say they are withdrawing their support because union members want the option to select a plan.

The city’s legal department indicates that they support the current plan and that the city will save $600 million a year.
