According to a US survey, Germany ranks second in terms of standard of living. Only one neighboring country is doing better.
The American Internet portal Yahoo has compiled a list of the 25 countries with the highest standard of living. Germany ranks high, but residents in a neighboring country are said to be even better off.
The UN Human Development Index (HDI) and ratings of the best countries by the American media served as the basis for the ranking. A mean value was then calculated from this.
Germany takes second place. It has the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, the summary said. In addition, many internationally renowned brands are based here. Another plus point: local and foreign young people are offered free, high-quality courses. Average life expectancy is 80.9 years. The UN gives Germany a 9 on their index, the value based on American media is 2. Overall, that was enough for a total value of 5.5.

But it should be even better to live in Switzerland. The Alpine country comes first in both the United Nations and the US media index, which is why the overall value is 1. One reason: According to a report by Credit Suisse Bank last year, the Swiss were among the wealthiest citizens of the world. The average wealth is over 600,000 euros. And: the life expectancy is 83 years. There is little unemployment and highly qualified employees. Switzerland has also done well in other surveys when it comes to quality of life ratings.
Sweden was third, followed by Australia and Norway. The US only ranks tenth. At the UN, they perform rather poorly with an index value of 21, but the assessment by the US media with a value of 4 improved the overall result. Slovenia ranks last among the 25 countries with the best standard of living.
