Up to 40% of the planet's land areas are degraded

MIAMI.- He Environment celebrates its World Day on June 5. This date was proclaimed, in 1972, by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The environment is represented by the set of chemical, physical and biological elements with which living beings interact. However, human action has altered the ecosystem.

Every year this day is sponsored by a country. In 2024 it will be up to Saudi Arabia. This anniversary has become one of the global platforms with the greatest reach in favor of environmental struggles.

Under the motto, “Our lands. Our future. We are the Restoration Generation,” the focus has been on restoring lands, stopping desertification and strengthening resilience to drought. In accordance with the Convention of the United Nations of the Fight against Desertification, up to 40% of the land areas of the planet They are degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population.

“The number and duration of drought periods have increased by 29% since 2000 and, if urgent action is not taken, droughts could affect more than three quarters of the world’s population by 2050,” warns the UN .

Planet in danger

The United Nations also indicates that ecosystems around the world are in danger: From forests and arid lands to agricultural lands and lakes, the natural spaces on which the existence of humanity depends “are reaching a point of no return.”

By 2024, the United Nations Development Program Environment (UNEP) has indicated that it will continue with initiatives on multilateralism, dialogue and adoption of measures and actions based on science, innovation, as well as associations in favor of people and the planet.

Furthermore, soil restoration represents a key pillar of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).
