US invites new Chinese foreign minister to high-level meeting in Washington

MADRID, 1 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The spokesman for the United States Department of State, Matthew Miller, explained on Tuesday that he has invited the new Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, to Washington for a high-level meeting with the aim of ironing out differences between the parties.

Miller explained at a press conference that US and Chinese officials met on Monday in a meeting in which Washington took the opportunity to once again extend an invitation to visit the country to the top Chinese diplomat.

“In a meeting yesterday we extended the invitation that had previously been made to former Foreign Minister Qin Gang and we made it clear that this invitation would be sent to Minister Yi,” he explained, although he did not specify whether Beijing has finally accepted it.

This comes after Wang was fired during a session of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (the Chinese Parliament), being replaced by Wang Yi, who already headed the ministry between 2013 and 2022 until his appointment as adviser to Chinese President Xi. Jinping.

The change in the Chinese Foreign Ministry also comes at a time when Beijing is increasing its weight internationally, after mediating the signing in March of an agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran to restore their bilateral relations, its proposal to peace for the war in Ukraine and its intervention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
