FRed Vasseur, head of the Ferrari team, explained how Ferrari’s decision-making was on the controversial radio of Carlos Sainz, who asked to pass Charles Leclerc by having a better time than the Monegasque in the early stages of the race.
“I think that the strategy has been the best that the team could do because we have achieved the best result of the season”, assured the French leader. “We agreed at the beginning of the race to do this, mainly to avoid someone coming up from behind and to help each other to follow Max and score as many points as possible,” he added.
“Of course when you go behind with the DRS you think you are faster, but Carlos knew the strategy from the beginning, I think he wanted to put us under pressure. His pace was not far from Charles’s, but we have to analyze if the strategy was the right one,” he insisted.
The weather and the subsequent sanction by the commissioners showed that it was not such a good strategy to leave your fastest car at the feet of the horses and behind several rivals. Sainz was penalized by a loose ball to return to his place.
