Canada ends Venezuela's dream and faces Argentina in the semis

The critical situation that Venezuela is currently experiencing has led several of the country’s leading athletes to take to their respective social media accounts to express their solidarity with the thousands of people who are currently in the streets in protest following allegations of fraud in the presidential elections held in the nation last Sunday.

Deyna Castellanosthe most renowned figure in women’s football in the South American country, posted a message on her Instagram account on Tuesday in which she expressed support for her compatriots and asked that the idea that athletes should not comment on political issues in their countries be put aside.

“There is always a very strong public opinion surrounding athletes regarding whether or not to talk about politics, since we are part of a federation or represent a country,” the player said in the text. “Many times we find ourselves in situations that we did not ask for, especially when we are minors. There can always be consequences, but I am willing to accept them. Venezuela wants change and ratified it through voting. I hope that all relevant national and international entities do justice to the truth. I also call for them to put down their weapons and let the people express their discontent in peace and democracy. Yes, I am an athlete, but above all Venezuelan,” she added.

Meanwhile, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras, who went viral on social media on Sunday for his message to the country on Election Day, ratified his support for his compatriots on Monday by writing on his chest protector “Let’s go Venezuela.”

Pride and faith

Jon Aramburu, one of the pillars of the Venezuelan national team that had a historic first phase in the last Copa América in the United States, also sent his message of support to the citizens who have protested and continue to protest in different cities of the country against the results announced by the National Electoral Council.

“If anyone knows what it means to fight until the end, it’s us.” Venezuelans“, wrote the footballer. “What a great pride to defend the colours of this wonderful people. I am with you until the end, Venezuela. Strength and faith. Our country needs us all. No more violence, no more deaths.”
