Caracas, May 8 (EFE).- The Catholic Church of Venezuela expressed its solidarity this Monday with the families of the migrants from this country who died after being run over on Sunday in Texas, United States, and made a call to pray for the recovery of the wounded.

“We invite you to offer prayers and suffrages for the eternal rest of the deceased and we implore the speedy recovery of the injured. May the protection of María, companion on the way, cover each brother who travels to other countries looking for better living conditions, “said the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) through a statement.

He urged governments and international organizations to “protect migrants and immediately implement comprehensive policies that respond to the mobility crisis that the Latin American region is experiencing.”

“The CEV reiterates its commitment so that the rights of migrants are respected and respect for the dignity of each person prevails,” added the CEV.

According to the US authorities, the victims of the run over of Venezuelan migrants in front of a center for the homeless in the Texas town of Brownsville increased to eight, after one of the injured died at a local hospital.

The hit-and-run occurred this Sunday morning when a car ran into a group of pedestrians who were waiting at a bus stop in front of the Centro Obispo Enrique San Pedro Ozanam shelter for homeless people, converted into a shelter due to the hundreds of migrants passing through the area.

The author of the hit-and-run, George Álvarez, of Hispanic origin, received eight charges for reckless homicide and another ten for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda said Monday.

Both the government of Nicolás Maduro and various sectors of the opposition have mourned the death of the migrants, to whose families they have sent their condolences.
