Mexico City.- Combating fentanyl trafficking is a shared responsibility between the United States and Mexico and involves a global effort, US Ambassador Ken Salazar said.

The diplomat said that the Last Mile operation, in which more than 3,300 people linked to the Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels were arrested in one year, is an example of the work that authorities in his country have carried out.

“In the United States, we will continue to combat the cartels and criminals who bring synthetic drugs, along with pain, death and violence to our communities. We will also continue to strengthen comprehensive prevention and treatment efforts,” he said.

“We are strengthening the fight against fentanyl every day with our partners in North America. These actions with Operation Last Mile show that criminals have nowhere to hide and that they will face the law,” he added.

The operation, which was carried out in the United States, also allowed the seizure of 193 million doses of fentanyl powder and pills, 8,500 firearms, 91 pounds of methamphetamine and more than 100 million dollars.

“The fight against fentanyl and its precursors is a shared responsibility and an effort that must be global. We will continue to strengthen our work with strategic partners such as Mexico, through the Bicentennial Framework and the High Level Security Dialogue.

Together with Mexico and Canada, we have made a common front against drug and arms trafficking in North America and we are sure that it will give more results to protect our peoples, their health and well-being,” he emphasized.
