CARACAS.- The opposition Democratic Party denounced a new episode of repression in the country after the arrest of two activists and a journalist between Friday, June 14, and the early hours of Saturday, June 15.
Vente Venezuela, María Corina Machado’s organization, pointed out that on Friday in La Guaira, 29 kilometers from Caracas, journalist Luis López and JeanCarlos Rivas, a young activist from the Voluntad Popular party, “were disappeared.”
“Early this Saturday morning, Juan Iriarte, Vente’s organizational coordinator in Maiquetía, was also kidnapped. We demand to know the whereabouts of these three Venezuelans, as well as their immediate release. The change is unstoppable and none of our colleagues will be left behind,” he said. The head of María Corina Machado’s Command, Magalli Meda, who has an arrest warrant and is being held in the Argentine embassy, wrote on the X network: “This is barbaric! We are in an ‘electoral campaign’ and they annihilate the opponent. What kind of campaign is this? Political rights must be respected.”
In addition, he called on the international community to focus the eyes of the world on Venezuela. “There are 43 days left until elections on July 28 and this has to stop. Freedom for all.”
They reject persecution
Adriana Pichardo, national leader of the Voluntad party, rejected the persecution against the Venezuelan opposition that fights for political change in the next elections.
“21 hours have already passed since our activist JeanCarlos Rivas disappeared in the state of La Guaira, along with him two more people in the same condition of forced disappearance. Strong persecution of the teams is reported throughout the state. This is extremely delicate and represents a very serious violation of the human rights“, he denounced.
At the same time, the leader indicated that “we are all working on the electoral campaign focused on the electoral route for our participation and victory in the July 28 process. Enough of the persecution.”
