Berlin
Air travelers in Germany have to be prepared for massive disabilities on Friday. Several airports are affected by strikes.

There will probably be massive disruptions to air traffic on Friday. The Union Verdi has called for strikes at several airports in Germany, including the hubs in Munich and Frankfurt am Main. “Due to the strike, delays, cancellations and even the partial standstill of air traffic are to be expected, especially in domestic air traffic,” the union said on Wednesday night.

In addition to Frankfurt am Main and Munich, the strike call applies to the airports in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hanover and Bremen. In all of these places, the industrial action is scheduled to begin in the early hours of Friday morning and end on Saturday night. Verdi announced that it was a joint strike by employees in the public sector, aviation security and ground handling services.

Verdi boss: “Employees put pressure together”

According to the union, the reason for the strikes is the collective bargaining for employees in the public sector at federal and local level, as well as local negotiations for employees in ground handling services and nationwide negotiations for employees in aviation security. Collective bargaining is currently being conducted for all three employee groups.

“The employees are jointly putting pressure on the respective employers because no results have been achieved in the previous negotiations,” explained Verdi Vice President Christine Behle. Among other things, it should be achieved that the employers in the public sector present a negotiable offer in the next round of negotiations in the coming week. Airport fire brigades, for example, are among the employees affected by these negotiations.

Strikes at airports: what happens to aid deliveries to Turkey?

The employers of ground handling services and aviation security should also put more money on the table, Behle demanded. For example, there is still a catastrophic situation in the ground handling services, which, among other things, ensure the loading and unloading and refueling of the aircraft labor shortage. Many travelers felt the effects, especially last summer. In order not to experience this again, an “attractive wage increase” was necessary, the demanded Verdi Vice President. Aviation security employees, on the other hand, are entitled to an increase in the surcharges in the general collective agreements, which their employers have so far denied them.

At the same time, the trade unionist campaigned for the understanding of the passengers who were affected by the strike “Unfortunately” would be met. In order to keep the burden on them as low as possible, the labor dispute has already been announced. This should enable travelers to switch to alternatives.

According to Verdi, the aid deliveries to the Turkish-Syrian earthquake should be carried out by the strikes not be affected. The union will offer employers emergency service agreements for this. (lro/AFP)
