A baby was born with a 6 cm long tail on her back, just above her buttocks, in Jundiaí, in the municipality of São Paulo. The extremely rare case took place in 2020, but only became public now after being reported in the latest edition of Journal of Pediatric Surgery.

The tail is a rare birth defect called spina bifida. In such cases, during the period of fetal development, some vertebrae that should protect the spinal cord do not form, remaining open. This causes part of the spinal cord to protrude through the opening and become exposed to the amniotic fluid. The projection leads to the formation of a tail-like structure.

Doctors from Hospital da Criança Greendacc studied the baby together with researchers from the Center for Fetal and Placental Research, in Ohio, in the United States. The baby’s tail had blood vessels, muscles and nerves, but no bones.

The child underwent removal surgery and was followed up for three years. Doctors used a muscle flap to close the hole left where the tail protruded. Today the girl is well and healthy. See photos of the child below:
