The chairman of the National Defense and Armed Forces Committee in the Assembly assures us that the war in Ukraine will be fought on the ground and insists on France’s responsibility, as a nuclear power, to maintain dialogue with Vladimir Putin.

“The usefulness today is to help the Ukrainians on the ground”, estimates Thursday, February 9 on franceinfo Thomas Gassilloud, Renaissance deputy for the 10th district of the Rhône and president of the commission for national defense and the armed forces in the Assembly. While the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, is traveling in Europe to demand the dispatch of air assets to help Ukraine win against Russia, Thomas Gassilloud assures that “the request of the Ukrainians is under investigation” but that “the “priority is ground support. That’s where this war will be fought.” according to him.

“We focus on delivering the materials advertised”, land means, tanks and shells, continues the deputy. According to Thomas Gassilloud, “it is already a question of realizing the promises that have been made”. Thomas Gassilloud considers that planes would be less operational than the land equipment promised. “Western planes would be long equipment to implement, Ukrainian pilots would have to be trained, all maintenance with them”, he explains.

“We want to help Ukraine defend itself without being in an escalation position with Russia.

Thomas Gassiloud is aware of the scope “symbolic” of sending planes to Ukraine. The MP, convinced that we must continue to dialogue with Vladimir Putin, recalls that France, because it has nuclear weapons, has “a particular responsibility” who him “requires being in permanent contact with all the powers endowed at the world level. This is why I support the President of the Republic on his desire to maintain the link with Vladimir Putin”, he summarizes.

Regarding the request to send missiles with longer ranges, Thomas Gassilloud recalls that “the allies, with each delivery of armaments, condition their deliveries to a strict use on the Ukrainian territory”.
