Joshua Dejaen, @jdflyback on YouTube, is a 24-year-old electrical engineer from Seattle, Washington. During his working hours, he develops devices for MRI ground investigations (Magnetic resonance imaging, dt. MRT). He became interested in tubes and electronics at the age of 12, then a few years ago his interest was spurred on by the ubiquitous YouTube Finishing.

Joshua spent a lot of time with them Videos by YouTuber @glasslinger. However, in the foreseeable future, the many devices and devices that are used here seemed to be a size too big. The turning point from amazement to action was the accidental discovery of the Website (attention rabbit hole) of a certain simplifier achieved. Here, processes and procedures are broken down to the basics: what can be done with the fewest possible number of special tools, how did our ancestors start developing the procedures? Working with glass and the manufacture of tubes is also part of the wealth of knowledge there.

The necessary equipment was procured or made by Joshua, you don’t need much more than a good gas burner and a vacuum pump for simple tubes. Oh and of course a spot welder. Joshua made this out of a converted microwave oven transformer (“The number one device which killed people from the electronic community.”). The circuit diagram is available in the podcast with an interview with the maker. The first functional tube was then only able to switch a few micro-amps, but a start had been made.

@jdflyback’s most successful video to date is building an amp with homemade tubes. Building and creating the video took three months of work in his spare time. The videos don’t follow the trends on YouTube to fill silence with music and spice up empty spaces in the picture with flashing graphics, but convey the calm and craftsmanship (and a good portion of making and hacking) that are necessary for such a project.
