A relic from the early 2000s will soon be abolished: Vodafone will discontinue the “Multimedia Messaging Service”, MMS for short, in mid-January 2023. 20 years ago, Vodafone was the first provider in Germany to offer MMS sending and receiving.

This will soon be over – but this will probably hardly affect any user. Multimedia content such as photos and videos have been sent via messenger services such as WhatsApp, Signal or Viber for years.

More generally: Photos and Co. are sent via data connections and not via the special MMS offer, since it is relatively more expensive and that is probably why it never really caught on.

From January 17th no more support at Vodafone

As of January 17, 2023, Vodafone will now completely shut down the MMS service. You can still use the service until then, after which Vodafone will block this transmission path. The group is now reminding you of this again. Deutsche Telekom also announced some time ago that the MMS was to be phased out. The group had actually planned to switch off the service in mid-2020. Then, however, there were two more plan changes to the shutdown. It is currently said that the end of 2023 will be the end of the MMS. O2 is the only German provider who has not yet thought about ending support. So far there is no shutdown date.

Vodafone is now the first to make short work of it. The mobile operator’s website states:

Things are not going so well for MMS, however

The situation is different for the sister technology MMS, with which short messages can be enriched with photos and films. “Compared to SMS, MMS has always led a shadowy existence. The technology is outdated and the customer benefit is minimal. Today, pictures and videos are almost exclusively sent to individual recipients or groups via messenger,” explains Tanja Richter. Vodafone has announced that it will switch off the MMS service from January 2023. “My heart is breaking, but it has to be: It’s over!”, one or the other would probably write via SMS about this line. “Acla?” (Understood?)
