Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, visiting Berlin, on Sunday hailed the support given to Kiev by Germany, which he described as a “true friend” and a “reliable ally”.
“In the most difficult period of modern Ukrainian history, Germany has proven itself to be our true friend and reliable ally, which stands resolutely on the side of the Ukrainian people in the struggle for the defense of freedom and democratic values”, wrote Volodymyr Zelensky in the guestbook of the German presidency where he was received at the start of the morning.

Volodymyr Zelensky arrived overnight in Berlin aboard a German government plane escorted by Luftwaffe fighters from Italy where he met with the head of government Giorgia Meloni and Pope Francis, who s is said to be ready to work for the return of Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia.
Dressed in his traditional khaki pants and a black sweatshirt, the Ukrainian president was first welcomed by his counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on the occasion of his first visit to Germany since the start of the war. “In these most important times in Ukraine’s modern history, Germany has shown that it is a true friend and a strong ally,” Volodimir Zelensky wrote in the guestbook of the German presidency. “We will win together and we will bring peace to Europe.”
Ukraine’s president is expected to give a joint press conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz later today, before heading to Aachen to receive the prestigious Charlemagne Prize honoring commitment to European unification . Volodimir Zelensky last visited Germany for the Munich Security Conference in February 2022, shortly before Vladimir Putin launched what Moscow calls “a special military operation” in Ukraine.
