Voracious fire consumes apartment building in Miami

MIAMI.- A large fire broke out Monday morning in a four-story apartment building in the city of Miami, and a man was found with a gunshot wound just outside, authorities confirmed.

The building, built in 1920 according to records, is located at Northwest 4th Avenue and 3rd Street.

Miami Fire Lt. Pete Sanchez confirmed there were “multiple patients.”

According to first responders, the emergency call came in around 8:15 a.m. reporting an explosion and it is known that many elderly people live in the apartment building.

“This is a three-alarm fire. We haven’t had one like this in 25 years, so it’s a big event for us and the crews are doing a heroic job dealing with it, including rescuing residents,” the mayor said. Miami, Francis Suárez, during a press conference.

Suárez added that more than 40 units responded to the incident and that some residents were provisionally taken to José Martí Park, near the building.

Upon arrival, crews found a man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen outside the building. Police said it is still unclear if the shooting and fire are related.

According to authorities, some residents were rescued from their balconies while others were evacuated by land.
