Information you should know before moving into a home in Texas

HOUSTON – Thinking of moving to a new neighborhood? Surely you already found out which schools correspond to your children, which parks are nearby and even which shopping centers are in your area.

But there is some information that you should always review before giving the final yes to a property rental or mortgage contract: whether or not you will have sexual offenders in your neighborhood.

And although it may seem difficult to obtain information, the advantage is that in Texas these data are public and are offered to you by the Department of Public Safety.

There you can find the exact address of the people who have been convicted of having sexual contact with minors, as well as their names and the level of risk that these people represent within your community.

It should be remembered that sexual offenders, as part of their sentences, are required to register in a database, which is published by the Department of Public Safety.

This entity has the power to warn a specific community in the event that a sexual offender with a “high level of risk” moves there.

By Texas law, anyone convicted of a child sex crime, anywhere in the country, must be registered in that database if the conviction was issued after September 1, 1970.

That is, a person who was convicted before September 1, 1970 does not need to register as a sex offender in Texas.
