Election posters may be present everywhere in the Berlin cityscape, but they hardly help to decide for a party. There is simply not enough text on the posters. On the other hand, no one usually reads the election programs in their entirety. On the other hand, a popular aid when making a voting decision is the Wahl-O-Mat – which can be completely filled out in less than ten minutes.

An information offer, not a recommendation
Since 2002, the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) has put the Wahl-O-Mat for federal and state elections on the Internet, adapted to the respective election. The bpb is a state institution and takes care of the education of young people and adults. Accordingly, the bpb sees the Wahl-O-Mat as an information service, not as an election recommendation. One should then better understand what the parties stand for in terms of content.
Here’s how it works: 38 theses on the 2023 Berlin election
At the Wahl-O-Mat to Berlin election 2023 38 theses are presented (you can read them out or have them displayed in sign language). The theses relate to policy areas such as transport, administration, education and the environment. For example, one of the theses reads: “In Berlin, the use of local public transport should be free of charge.” Under the respective thesis, click on: “agree”, “neutral” or “disagree”.

Once you have finished with the 38 theses, you can then weight them in a final step – depending on whether certain topics are particularly important to you. In the end, the parties with which you want to compare your points of view have to be selected and the Wahl-O-Mat lists the parties with which there is the greatest agreement.
