In a daily interview The echoes published this Sunday, the head of state returned to his exchanges with Xi Jinping on the subject of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, while the strong man of Beijing is considered to be one of the only leaders still able to exchange with Vladimir Putin. At the end of March, the Chinese president was on an official visit to Moscow.
“Is Ukraine a priority for Chinese diplomacy? Perhaps not. But this dialogue helps to temper the comments that we have heard about a form of complacency on the part of China towards Russia” , said Emmanuel Macron.
“China makes the same observation as us”
In the past, the remarks of the President of the Republic could have annoyed in kyiv, in particular on his will to “not humiliate Russia”. Emmanuel Macron this time felt that “the time is not for negotiations, even if we prepare them and we have to plant the milestones”.
Then to continue: “I think that China makes the same observation as us, namely that today, the weather is military. The Ukrainians are resisting and we are helping them”.
A “common matrix”
For many analysts, China politically supports Russia in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, some even fearing that Beijing could in the future support Moscow militarily, by supplying it with weapons.
Emmanuel Macron insisted on being optimistic: “I note that President Xi Jinping spoke of European security architecture. However, there can be no European security architecture as long as there are invaded countries in Europe or frozen conflicts. So you see that there is a common matrix emerging from all of this”.
