Ukrainian officials have been brandishing for weeks the threat of a new assault by the Russian army and are calling for more arms support from Western countries.

LUkraine expects Russia to start a new offensive in the spring that will see the toughest fighting since the war began in February 2022. “We have already come a long and difficult road but I think the worst is to come”, probably in the next two or three months, said Wednesday Oleksii Danilov, secretary of the Council of defense and national security of Ukraine, in an interview broadcast on the British channel Sky News. At the same time, Oleksii Danilov does not exclude that a Russian offensive will already occur in the next two to three weeks. “Moscow is preparing for maximum escalation,” he said. He claims that new units are currently being formed and trained on the Russian side. He puts the number of Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine at some 320,000, about half of whom could take part in a new offensive.
