On the eastern EU external border between Poland and Belarus, a dispute with border closures for freight traffic continues to escalate.

Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski announced in Warsaw that he would also close the last border crossing for trucks from Belarus from Tuesday evening. This was reported by the PAP news agency on Monday.

The background to the dispute is the conviction of the journalist Andrzej Poczobut, a representative of the Polish minority in Belarus, to eight years in a camp. As a result, Poland only closed the Bobrowniki border crossing in mid-February.

In return, Belarus made border traffic more difficult for Polish trucks and expelled three Polish diplomats. The new closure by Poland affects the Kukuryki-Koroszczyn crossing. The only border crossing for passenger traffic in Terespol is still open.

Relations between Poland and Belarus are also strained because the authoritarian ruler Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Lukashenko also encourages refugees to attempt illegal entry into Poland and thus the EU via his country. (dpa)
