The Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Romeo Rodríguez, announced this Friday that the institution will change 100% of the country’s traffic lights starting next week.

“We are going to change 100% of the traffic lights in El Salvador, at the same time new traffic lights will be installed at some intersections”said. “The installation of the traffic light lenses will be at the rate of one intersection per day”he added.

The investment is $49 million and will be executed within a year. In total, 2,871 intelligent traffic lights will be placed at 350 intersections, 799 cameras will detect the speed of different drivers on different streets, 1,200 structures will be built, 77 kilometers of fiber optics will be distributed, and various pedestrian paths will be improved.

“This is a technology implemented in the United States and Europe, which guarantees order and better vehicular traffic, because traffic lights respond to the number of vehicles in circulation,” explained the official.

This change in the traffic light system also includes the creation of a temporary monitoring center and, in parallel, the permanent building in the facilities of the Ministry of Public Works; as well as the installation of pedestrian traffic lights.

According to the minister, experts in this matter inspected different roads to identify where new traffic lights should be placed and where their use is no longer necessary; a task that began in October and concluded in December 2022. As of January 2023, excavations began to place the foundations, underground wiring, and pedestals for some cabinets in the Juan Pablo II avenue and Los Héroes boulevard, in San Salvador.

With the installation of these intelligent traffic lights and the establishment of a traffic monitoring center, mobility times for motorists will be reduced and land traffic will continue to be ordered throughout the country.
