"We want justice," says Ariadna Fernanda's brother after the arrest of the Morelos prosecutor

MEXICO CITY (appro).- “As a family, we want justice to be done, that all those involved, from Morelos, from Carmona and all their people, comply and pay for the damages, because we are outraged,” says Omar López, brother of Ariadna Fernanda López Díaz.

In an interview with Proceso, he considers that with the arrest this Friday the 4th of the Attorney General of Justice of Morelos, Uriel “N”, for his alleged responsibility for “obstructing and diverting” the investigation into the femicide of the 27-year-old girl that occurred on October 2022, “you can already see that justice is being done. Uriel is already in custody and is on trial, that is the most important thing for us as a family.”

He adds that the arrest of the Morelos official, which occurred on the afternoon of Friday the 4th after the investigation by the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office (FGJCMX), can serve to “no longer repeat femicides and no longer cover up to people with economic power”.

Asked whether the forensic doctor who performed the first necropsy on Ariadna’s body should also be arrested, which found that the young woman would have died from alcoholic congestion and bronchial aspiration, he replies:

“Clear! I think that, out of common sense, it will be done, you cannot defend the indefensible and more, without arguments. The important thing here is that they did harm to the family because they made us believe that she had died from alcoholic congestion. All those who are involved in this case, be they experts, be they people from Carmona, must be punished.”

Ariadna’s brother stresses that this arrest shows that the Prosecutor’s Office headed by Ernestina Godoy “did its job well” and assures that throughout the investigation the institution “has been in communication” with the victim’s family.

He also recognizes Claudia Sheinbaum: “With the (former) head of government, at the time, she did the job, she supported us, now the Prosecutor’s Office continues with the arrest of Carmona. The case is still alive and we hope it stays that way and that there is justice for everyone.”

let the judge do his job

Although at the time of the interview with Omar López the legal situation of Uriel “N” had not been defined, he was already on his way to being admitted to the South Male Preventive Prison, where the control judge who requested him must define his legal situation.

-What do you ask the judge who is handling the case?

-Just do your job. I imagine there is evidence, so Carmona has already been arrested and the process continues.

– As a family, do you have any fear that the prosecutor will be released on the grounds that he has jurisdiction?

-As always, we are afraid, but we believe that justice is acting in the best way right now and we trust 100% in justice. After all, he is human and should be punished the same. Power does not prevent you from having a process.

And he emphasizes that the interest of the family is to clear the name of Ariadna:

“What we want is justice. We do not think of anything other than justice, that Ari’s name be clear and that the people, that all of Mexico be calm and that there will be no more femicides and that there is less corruption.

Light for other cases in Morelos

Omar López comments that, after the femicide of his sister Ariadna, “many people were outraged and came to ask for information and support because Ari’s case was very relevant worldwide.”

And he is confident that “with this arrest of the prosecutor many people will see support or light for their relatives, because in Morelos there are many cases that remain unpunished.”

So, he launches a demand from the family: “We want everyone to have the same care as my sister’s case. For all there must be justice and good treatment.

He insists: “That we see that there is justice. We are in a country of change and we want that change for all women, that there be no more abuse, violence, femicides. That people can go out at a certain time and without fear.

Omar López acknowledges that “this fear makes us all tense because we see that there are corrupt public servants who behave in this way. At the Prosecutor’s Office they have supported us. I believe that the change can be made, it is only to want to”.
