Unthinkable ten to fifteen years ago: The reputation of licensed games has improved enormously in recent times, which is partly due to major blockbuster highlights such as Spider-Man developed by Insomniac Games, the Batman series by Rocksteady or video games that were only still have to prove their qualities, but are already experiencing enormous hype. For example Hogwarts Legacy or Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Unfortunately, in the adaptation area of the anime and manga world, even in 2023, this is still playing mediocre – if at all. But there are also exceptions: In January 2020, the open-world adventure Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot caused a stir. The story about Goku and his friends suffers from a lifeless game world and strong pacing problems in the narrative area, but shines with many memorable fan moments and a Dragon Ball feeling in a class of its own.
The brand new JRPG One Piece: Odyssey (buy now €159.99 ) also pleases thanks to a loving implementation of famous places of the Grandline, but suffers from immense problems in terms of the structure of the adventure and the monotonous quest processes as well as the half-baked combat system, which is particularly annoying after a long gameplay.
