That’s true, of course: I wasn’t just able to unpack Sony’s new headset, I’ve also been playing with it since yesterday. However, I am not allowed to tell you anything about that today and details about the handling of PlayStation VR2 also only refer to external aspects at the moment.

All the better that this touch feels really good from the first moment! On the one hand, the headset is packed, as is usual nowadays, in such a way that even unpacking the tidy compartments is fun and opening them is reminiscent of these books, from which small dioramas fold out when they are opened.

For another, it’s a treat to plug in versus Sony’s first VR headset. The earplugs click into the bracket in two easy steps, then the small USB plug is inserted into the PS5 and you’re ready to go. Since I also want to connect an external hard drive to this small USB port on the console, there is only a little switching work to be done in the next few days before the data carrier and adapter can be moved.

If you want, you can simply click the included in-ear headphones under the bracket at the back of your head. As is usual with this type of headphone, there are three different sized attachments for different sized ears. (PlayStation VR2)

Once again, I loved how well Sony managed to make the headset feel like a high-quality everyday item when some comparable devices still make a bit of niche hardware. I still like putting it on! But how easy it is to push the display module forward to make it easier to put on and take off, and how easy it is to tighten or loosen the strap at the back of the head is simply remarkable. Users of the previous model already know both.

Unfortunately, I already know from the last generation that I have to wear the headset on my head as high as possible on the forehead and pull the rear bracket relatively low, but that is not an obstacle. The light plastic cape encloses the eyes pleasantly soft and almost completely seals them off from the surrounding light. And if it starts in VR shortly afterwards… All I can say at this point is that you can look forward to a little piece of technical magic!

Apart from that, the two Sense controllers (are they actually called MonoSense Left and MonoSense Right?) are also comfortable to hold. No wonder; they are now finally reminiscent of the now established concept of other manufacturers, so that they are not only easy to hold, but also convincingly convey the grip that is so important in virtual reality.

The design concept of the controller is based on that of other VR headsets. This eliminates the need to purchase additional Move controllers. (PlayStationVR2)

The USB ports hold not only the supplied, but also other USB cables unusually strong, but this is only mentioned for the sake of completeness. In return, the Pulse 3D Wireless, Sony’s own headset, fits easily over the PS VR2, so that you can also enjoy its very wide spatial sound in virtual reality.

So much for the purely external impression. So Sony shows once again what user-friendly hardware looks like – now I’m curious to see what both the associated software and the games that will be launched have to offer!
