What awaits Venezuelans in Peru who do not have a visa?

LIMA.- Recently, the National Immigration Superintendency of Peru announced that as of July 2, 2024, new requirements will be incorporated for the entry and stay of citizens Venezuelans in the country. The fact has caused confusion among the 1.5 million migrants and Venezuelan refugees who, approximately, are in Peru, irregularly.

However, the legal implications to which Venezuelans who are currently in Peru without a visa and/or passport are subject are not specified.

The regulation nullifies Resolution No. 000177-2019-Migrations, which authorized the entry into national territory of Venezuelan citizens, minors and adults, to reunite with their family unit, only by presenting their identity card, as well as people in vulnerable situations.

What will happen to the Venezuelans?

In one of its provisions, the resolution indicates that Venezuelans who are already in the country with expired passports are allowed to request a change in immigration status. Therefore, Venezuelans who are in this condition must comply with all the other requirements and conditions of the immigration procedures:

  • Resident Immigration Quality: Valid ordinary Venezuelan passport; and, corresponding Visa, granted by a Peruvian Consular Office.
  • Resident Migratory Quality, in its Humanitarian version: Valid ordinary Venezuelan passport; and, valid Humanitarian visa, granted by a Peruvian Consular Office.
