Why will INEGI no longer provide statistical information from the SEP?

Check what was published in the DOF on April 10, 2023to begin to find out why the Inegi will no longer provide statistical information on the SEP:

“The determination as Information of National Interest (IIN) to the Statistical Information of the Educational Information and Management System is revoked in terms of what is established by the Law of the National System of Statistical Information and Geography”.

Here it is, verbatim, the agreement reached by the Inegi after the SEP justified why its information cannot be considered to be in the national interest.

And therefore, Inegi will stop providing statistical information on educationbecause precisely the Educational Information and Management System (SIGED) is the one that has toooooda the information from the Ministry of Public Education, but it was no longer classified as of national interest.

What is information of national interest?

For the Inegi to work with information considered of national interest, it must meet certain criteriaaccording to the Law of the National System of Statistical and Geographic Information (SNIEG), as:

Working with indicators of various topics or data groups, such as education. To be necessary for the design and evaluation of public policies in Mexico.

To be info generated regularly and that this is elaborated by means of a scientific methodology.

But since the SEP changed the criteria, the Secretariat says that for this reason it cannot enter this category.

And in this regard, organizations such as Mexicanos Primero criticized this decision because it says that it It adds more opacity to the state in which education is located, the teacher payroll and the educational infrastructure.

In addition to that: How will education in Mexico be evaluated? As a result of what information will public policies be created for its proper development?

What does the Inegi say?

If you check the DOF, there they more or less explain that all this change is related to other changes in structure and even the legal framework with which the SEP moves.

However, once this news became a scandal, the Inegi went out to explain that the SEP and the National System of Statistical and Geographic Information They will continue to work on the review of Mexican educational statistics.

Nothing more than they are keeping an eye on a new proposal, which is to give the information of national interest criterion to another review program which is the Information Program of the Continuous Education Statistics System of the 911 Format, recently created —or well, which was launched in the 2018-2019 period.

Peeero while that happens, the SEP and the Inegi are under the scrutiny of civil organizationswhich in turn are pending that these institutions do not end up giving gruel with the finger.

The concern is still there because despite the institutions they will continue with the collection of data from the Educational Information and Management Systemthe Inegi has just stepped aside, stopping publishing this info.
